Why Oxford is the Perfect Place for Your Wedding

When you think of “Oxford” you of course think of the University (who looks after the Bodleian Libraries of course), after that you might think of Inspector Morse or Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series. But do you often think of weddings? In this journal entry, we’re here to tell you why Oxford is the perfect place for your Wedding.

First, we should say what makes the Bodleian a perfect wedding venue. Couples can get married in either the medieval Divinity School or the stately Convocation House. Both spaces are unique in their own special ways. The Divinity School is decorated with over 400 carvings on the ceiling, each with its own meaning – making it a truly stunning sight on your big day. It looks absolutely unforgettable when illuminated by our AV & Lighting partners THAT Event Company as well. You might also recognise the Divinity School from its appearances in the Harry Potter films (Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire, if you were wondering), but you don’t need to be a wizard or witch to create magic for your wedding here!

The Convocation House is an understated gem, a true piece of Oxford history. It was built in the 1600s as a debating chamber, and all the wood in this space is original. Yes, even the seats your guests will be sat on are almost 400 years old! The mighty seat at the front is for the University Chancellor, and still used by them for official University business. If that isn’t impressive enough, the Chancellors chair has also been sat in by two English Kings, Charles I and Charles II respectively. If you like the thought of a regal flourish to your big day, the Convocation House could be for you!

If you’re looking at having your reception at the Bodleian, then our Old Schools Quadrangle, is a fabulous private place for an outdoor drinks reception, where you and your guests can enjoy secluded surroundings of golden stone as you sip some wine and enjoy a canape served by Oxford Fine Dining. If you’re looking at a winter date with us, then we can always organise a drinks reception at the stunning Sheldonian Theatre instead. The Sheldonian Theatre is directly across the Divinity School, so it’s only a few quick steps from your drinks reception to your wedding breakfast.

For couples who are looking for some private couples photography, upstairs we have the gorgeous Duke Humfrey’s Library, filled with books which are at least 200 years old. Whilst your guests are enjoying the drinks reception downstairs we’ll whisk you away for a few private moments (or peace!) upstairs. The warm atmosphere makes this the perfect backdrop for those newlywed moments, so do talk to us about adding this onto your booking if you decide to go with us.

Once you’ve sorted your venue, you now need to think about where you and all your guests are going to stay. The Bodleian is within walking distance of some fantastic luxury hotels, such as The Store, The Old Bank and The Randolph. Do check our recommended accommodation lists to find out more. If you’re organising your big day outside of the Oxford Terms then you might be able to book one of the iconic Oxford Colleges for accommodation to give your wedding a real touch of Oxford! To see which colleges are available, do get in contact with our colleagues at Conference Oxford.

Another reason why Oxford is the perfect place for a wedding is its excellent transport links. Oxford Railway Station has direct trains from both London Marylebone and Paddington, as well as being connected to both Birmingham and Manchester. Recently, a Saturday service has also been established with Bristol as well. For guests coming from further afield, there is also a direct train line connecting with Birmingham Airport and a 24/7 coach service which connects Oxford to both London Heathrow and Gatwick airports. With all these options, why not consider Oxford as a location for a destination wedding?

Finally, why you should pick Oxford as your wedding location is because of the sheer amount incredible things to see and do in Oxford to turn your big day into a special weekend! Most of the Oxford Colleges are open on the weekends, including Magdalen with its stunning deer park and Christchurch (the Harry Potter College). If you want to experience typical Oxford, then do pop to Magdalen Bridge for a punt but do anticipate queueing during the Summer! If you’re looking for delicious food, then the iconic Oxford Covered Market has plenty of al fresco choices, and if you’re looking for an elegant sit-down meal then do walk up to either Jericho or Summertown. Then if you want something interesting (and free!) to see, then visit some of the University’s iconic museums like the Ashmolean, Natural History Museum, the Pitt Rivers or the History of Science Museum.

We truly hope that this journal article has fully convinced you why Oxford is the perfect place for your wedding, and you should certainly book the Bodleian Libraries for your big day!
