Accessibility Policy
This website is run by the Bodleian Libraries, part of the University of Oxford. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using your browser or device settings
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- some older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
- some images do not have appropriate alternative text
- some form elements may not have associated labels
- the contrast of text over images may not meet recommended WCAG 2.1 contrast ratios
- keyboard focus is not always clearly visible

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
The Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
- Some images are missing alt text, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).
- Some text over background images does not meet minimum contrast requirements. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (contrast minimum).
- Some form elements are not correctly labelled. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships).
- Keyboard focus indicators may be missing or hard to see in some areas. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 (focus visible).
We are working with our web developers to fix these issues by September 2025.
Disproportionate burden
At present, we have not made any claims of disproportionate burden.
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
- Some PDF documents published before 23 September 2018 are not fully accessible. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs published before this date if they’re not essential to providing our services.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We are currently reviewing and updating the website content and design to improve accessibility. This includes:
- Adding meaningful alt text to all images
- Improving contrast on text overlays
- Ensuring all form fields are correctly labelled
- Enhancing keyboard navigation and focus visibility
We aim to complete this work by October 2025.
