So, you’ve got your venue (hopefully the Bodleian!), you’ve chosen your caterer, you’ve sorted your flowers, you’ve booked your dream band – what else is there to consider? Lights. That’s right, we’ve said lights. Whilst our elegant Convocation House and divine Divinity School are both stunning Grade I listed historic venues, they are also limited by those very things that make them unique. The Convocation House does have a warming level of house lights, and hires of the space do take place during the day – so we’ll be focusing on lighting the Divinity School for this particular journal post. We work with an incredible local company, THAT Event Company who provide all of our lighting needs for our stunning weddings, as well as mirror balls, ceiling washes, dancefloors and even DJs!

With its honey-coated stone walls, the best colours that work in the Divinity School are those warmer shades. One neutral colour that works incredibly well is “warm white” which is an off-white tone mixed with ever so slight hints of pink and amber to soften its edges a bit.

Speaking of amber, orange tones look spectacular in the Divinity School particularly if you’re thinking of an autumnal wedding. It creates such an atmosphere of comfort and intimacy in this iconic medieval space.

But don’t forget to get creative with the lighting, do touch base with THAT Event Company ahead of the big day to discuss what colours you want for your big day. You don’t even have to pick just one colour, which is perfect for indecisive couples! The unique architecture of the Divinity School, with its arches allows you to have one main colour in the room, whilst having pops of colour within the arches (or ribs as we sometimes call them!). Again, we quite often see that the main colour is the old favourite warm white, accented by bright ambers or pinks.

For couples that want to go a little outside the box… we do have you covered! Bright pinks do look fantastic in the space, and when mixing with deep blues and purples, can create a fantastic “night time” look to your wedding reception, especially as you boogie into the night! THAT Event Company can also provide ceiling washes to go across the entirety of the Divinity School ceiling, enveloping your guests in a fantastic splash of colour.

If we haven’t sold you on THAT Event Company already, another fantastic thing about them is that they work with your band for the evening reception, completing their sound checks and also ensuring that whoever you have booked sounds the best in the Divinity School. They also have a DJ on the books as well if you wanted to have more of a nightclub vibe in the later hours of your wedding.

And speaking of nightclub vibes, do always think about adding some disco balls to your wedding package. There’s nothing quite like seeing the Divinity School glittering in the late night – it makes it look even more magical than usual! If you want some even more sparkle and glitz then do talk to THAT Event Company about adding a dancefloor so you can truly boogie the night away.

When it comes to lights at the Bodleian, you really do have a ton of options when it comes to working with THAT Event Company, to create the perfect atmosphere for your big day!
